Mayfield, Jackson, Love are Heisman Trophy finalists

Heisman Straw Poll Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield a unanimous choice

Jackson, who became the youngest victor of the Heisman Trophy in 2016, is attempting to match Ohio State's Archie Griffin as the only two-time victor of the award. He finished fourth in the Heisman voting in 2015, but was not invited to NY.

Mayfield, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound senior, led Oklahoma to a No. 2 ranking and a berth in the College Football Playoff.

Having Barkley not invited as a Heisman finalist has to be disappointing both to him and the Penn State football program as a whole. I still have another game to play this year and finish the season strong. Oklahoma plays Georgia (12-1) in the Rose Bowl semifinal on January 1.

Barkley, a 5-foot-11, 230-pound junior from Coplay, Pa., had been considered a front-runner for the award in the first half of the season. Jackson, who can become only the second two-time victor of the Heisman, led the nation in total offense with an average of 411.0 yards per game.

Love was a monster out of the Cardinal backfield, coming in second nationally in rushing yards (1,973) while going for an insane 8.3 yards per attempt. The star running back rushed for over 100 yards just once in the last five contests of the regular season. The nation's leader in all-purpose yards - by a 45-yard margin at 224.8 per game - is the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year and its Special Teams Player of the Year, the latter for his work as a kick returner. He left no doubt, cut off all other long-shot avenues, with four passing touchdowns in the Sooners' 41-17 rout of TCU in Saturday's Big 12 title game.

Not making that cut was a couple of talented running backs. Against Nevada three weeks ago, he scored on a rush, a kickoff return and a punt return.

From his game early in the season at Ohio State to his performance in the Big 12 Championship, Mayfield has been one of the frontrunners for the award.
