Instagram to carry abuse warning for koala and tiger selfies

Koenen, of World Animal Protection, wants to get language about animal welfare added to Instagram's guidelines for what people can post on the platform to begin with.

"The protection and safety of the natural world are important to us and our global community".

People who post selfies with wild animals could now be challenged for doing so.

Instagram has yet to decide on what the next phase of this project will be, but as an app with the number of users it has, this could be a big part of changing public opinion on animal rights. "If someone's behavior is interrupted, hopefully they'll think, maybe there's something more here, or maybe I shouldn't just automatically like something or forward something or repost something if Instagram is saying to me there's a problem with this photo", she said. In the Brazilian Amazon city of Manaus 18 tour companies said they offered opportunities on 94 percent of trips to "hold and touch wild animals as photo props". "And then when the animal gets too big they sell it, sometimes for body parts", he said.

In his own statement, Crawford Allan, a senior director of TRAFFIC at the World Wildlife Fund, claimed, "Social media has not yet really woken up to the full scale and extent of the nature of illegal wildlife trade that's being used and promoted [on social networks]".

Starting today, Instagram is rolling out a new alert system to its more than 800 million users.

Now anyone trying to search for the kinds of hashtags on which people post such behaviour - like #KoalaSelfie or #SlothSelfie - will see a message telling them that they might be enabling abusive behaviour.

Instagram has experimented with pop-up messages for other hashtags in the past surrounding suicide, eating disorders and other forms of self-harm, and already has safeguards in place to prevent pictures of animal abuse and the sale of endangered animals or their parts.

The social media platform will use the tool to discourage users from purchasing wild animals for private use. Plus, all these pay-to-post images kinda normalize grabbing any animal and snapping a pic-like in this horrifying story of idiots murdering a baby dolphin for Insta, or this woman who killed a swan for a selfie.

"The majority are really unaware of a lot of the awful conditions and disgusting treatment that wild animals experience, so that we can really capture special vacation selfies".
