Ex-officer Slager gets 20 years for Walter Scott shooting

Defense Expert Says Walter Scott Said F*** The Police!' Before He was Killed

The former North Charleston cop could have received life in prison.

After the shooting, Slager picked up his stun gun and placed it next to Scott.

Defending Slager, lawyer Andy Savage said: 'There's nothing in Michael Slager's background, from birth to today, of any racial animus or any harassment of minority members of the community'.

But in May, he pleaded guilty to one federal charge of depriving Scott of his civil rights by using excessive force while carrying out his duties. The routine traffic stop turned deadly when Scott, a father of four, ran away and was fatally shot by Slager.

"I forgive Michael Slager".

A former SC police officer will spend 20 years in prison for shooting and killing an unarmed man in North Charleston, a case that drew worldwide attention and sparked a debate about the use of force by law enforcement.

Fredericks also said his analysis showed taser wire was wrapped around Slager's leg and was connected to Scott right before the shooting. But after the shooting, the Scott family successfully pleaded for calm, asking everyone to let the justice system run its course.

For three days, attorneys representing the federal government and a former SC officer charged in an unarmed black motorist's shooting death have presented technical testimony to a judge considering how much time Michael Slager should spend in federal prison.

Norton's sentence later Thursday will bring to an end one of the most notorious criminal cases in modern S.C. history, a case that attracted worldwide attention after a bystander's video of Scott's fatal shooting went viral on the Internet.

"No matter what sentence I give, neither the Scott family nor the Slager family is going to think that it's right", the judge said.

Slager was terminated by the force after the shooting and appeared in court as a former officer.

U.S. District Court Judge David Norton handed down the sentence Thursday against Michael Slager for the death of Walter Scott.

This week's sentencing hearings are a chance for Judge Norton to decide the basis for Slager's punishment: second-degree murder, as the federal prosecution is arguing, or manslaughter, as posited by the defense.

Slager faced murder charges in state court, but a jury in that case deadlocked previous year, and the charges were dropped as part of his federal plea deal.

Imel, an Federal Bureau of Investigation video expert, also took the stand, showcasing how far away Scott was when Slager fired each shot on the cell phone video. Prosecutors think he put it there to bolster his self-defense story.

Slager was also found guilty of obstruction of justice, and he faces 19 to 24 years in prison.

A pre-sentencing report for Slager found that he committed manslaughter and recommended 10 to almost 13 years in prison.

SC has been aggressive in charging white officers who shoot unarmed black people.

Savage has claimed that state and federal prosecutors teamed up to go after Slager together. He said that Slager and Scott had physically struggled before the shooting, and that explained the officer's state of mind. Groubert was sentenced to five years behind bars.
