Baker Mayfield wins Heisman Trophy

Heisman Trophy finalists from left Lamar Jackson Bryce Love and Baker

Mayfield is a former walk-on who has led the No. 2 Sooners to the College Football Playoff, where they will play No. 3 Georgia in the Rose Bowl on January 1.

Mayfield ran away with the award, amassing the third-most amount of points (2,398) by a Heisman candidate since 1950. Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson and Stanford running back Bryce Love finished behind him as finalists.

Despite not winning the award, Barkley still will have plenty accolades to fill his trophy case after winning the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, the Chicago Tribune Silver Football and the Paul Hornung Award, given to the nation's most versatile player. He is also the first senior to win the Heisman since Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith in 2006.

Mayfield, who is also expected to take home the Heisman Memorial Trophy on Saturday night, concluded the 2017 regular season by completing an FBS-best 71 percent of his attempts for 4,340 yards and 41 touchdowns, which each rank No. 2 nationally.

Mayfield and the Sooners face Georgia in the Rose Bowl on January 1 in a CFP semifinal, with the victor to face Alabama or Clemson in the championship game on January 8. Oklahoma now moves into second all-time for most Heisman winners by a single school.

Mayfield led the Sooners to a third consecutive Big 12 championship with a 12-1 record, and a berth in the College Football Playoff next month. Mayfield is the 7th player to ever be a finalist three times.

He has 129 career touchdown passes and 14,320 yards.
