Protests held in Lebanon to denounce United States decision over Jerusalem

Protesters take cover from tear gas fired by riot police during a demonstration in front of the U.S. embassy in Aukar east of Beirut Lebanon Sunday Dec. 10 2017

Clashes have broken out between hundreds of protesters and Lebanese security forces outside the U.S. Embassy in Beirut on Sunday during a demonstration against U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

"We came to say to the U.S. Embassy that it is an embassy of aggression and that Jerusalem is Arab and will stay Arab", said Ahmad Mustafa, an official in the leftist Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, who was among the demonstrators.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees live in Lebanon, including those who fled or were expelled from their homes after Israel's founding, as well as their descendants.

"There is no alternative to the two-State solution", Guterres said, "There is no Plan B". He called Israeli forces "terrorists", referring to a photograph of a blindfolded Palestinian youth being led away by more than a dozen soldiers in the West Bank.

The forces fired tear gas when the demonstrators tried to breach the barbed wire and reach a closed road leading to the embassy, a police source said.

Israeli Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said on Twitter that the security guard was seriously injured in an attack and the terrorist was among more than 20 people arrested in connection with the incident.

"We came here for a sit-in in front of the USA embassy to protest the decision taken by Trump".

Israel says that all of Jerusalem is its capital.

Lebanon is home to nearly half a million Palestinian refugees.

On Friday the US Embassy in Beirut issued a warning, saying that "several groups have announced public protests" and there were reports of "possible protests" on December 10.

Upon leaving on a diplomatic mission to Paris and Brussels late Saturday, Netanyahu said he "will present Israel's truth without fear and with head held high".

The Pope also called upon leaders to "commit themselves to avert a new spiral of violence" adding that they should encourage "peace, justice and security" for people in the region, which he described as a "battered land".

An worldwide consensus has long held that Jerusalem's final status should be determined through negotiations. Most countries consider East Jerusalem, which Israel annexed after capturing it in a 1967 war, to be occupied territory and say the status of the city should be left to be decided at future Israeli-Palestinian talks.

Before the protests broke out in Lebanon, the Arab League condemned Trump's decision as well, describing it as a "dangerous" development. Three Israeli were wounded and several vehicles were damaged.

Leaders in Indonesia - the world's largest Muslim country - have condemned Trump's decision.

Lieberman has long called for Wadi Ara to be incorporated into a future Palestinian state.
