Director claims Harvey Weinstein blocked him from casting Mira Sorvino

Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson says he was interested in casting Ashley Judd in the film before Harvey

Priestley explained what happened with Weinstein after Mira Sorvino tweeted her reaction to news that Peter Jackson confirmed the Weinstein brothers orchestrated a smear campaign that led Jackson to blacklist Sorvino and Ashley Judd.

In an interview with website Stuff on Thursday, Jackson said he expressed interest in casting Judd and Sorvino while pitching the project to Weinstein's production company Miramax.

"After this meeting we were told by Miramax to steer clear of both Ashley and Mira, because they claimed to have had "bad experiences" with these particular actresses in the past".

"We have no direct evidence linking Ashley and Mira's allegations to our Lord of the Rings casting conversations of 20 years ago - but we stand by what we were told by Miramax when we raised both of their names, and we are recounting it accurately", Jackson said.

Even though Miramax didn't ultimately produce the films, leaving Jackson free to suggest any casting choices he wished to New Line, Jackson said that the damage had already been done. Harvey told me I had to leave...

"Bad Santa" director Terry Zwigoff also claimed he was interested in casting Sorvino, but that Weinstein would hang up the phone every time he mentioned her name.

Priestley did not say if he had any other interactions with Weinstein, or if the producer had retaliated in any way. Weinstein had threatened to fire Jackson from the adaptation of the films if he didn't follow his demands to turn his proposed two-part film into one movie.

"The Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson alleged last week that in the late '90s, Miramax urged him not to cast Sorvino or Judd in the eventual blockbuster because they were "a nightmare to work with".

More information is coming in about all of the heinous acts that Hollywood megaproducer Harvey Weinsten committed against many industry members. Sorvino admitted to feeling "heartsick" over the news. "They weren't the type of guys I wanted to work with - so I haven't". "Although his name had to be on the Lord of the Rings credits for contractual reasons, he was not involved in the movies we ended up making".

He wrote: "Of course there is more to the story..."

Sorvino thanked Jackson on Twitter on Friday.
