Pentagon funded secret multimillion dollar program to investigate UFOs

The program reportedly produced documents that described sightings unidentified aircrafts and was run by Luis Elizondo, a military intelligence official.

The New York Times reported on Saturday that the hush-hush program, tasked with investigating sightings of unidentified flying objects, or UFOs, ran from 2007 to 2012 with $22 million in annual funding secretly tucked away in U.S. Defense Department budgets worth hundreds of billions of dollars.

The Pentagon acknowledged on Saturday that its long-secret UFO investigation program ended in 2012, when USA defense officials shifted attention and funding to other priorities. The Defense Department says the program shut down in 2012, although Elizondo told The Times the only thing that ended in 2012 was ended was government's funding of the program. He maintained that, despite the lack of official government funding, the program has continued with officials from the Central Intelligence Agency and the Navy.

Initial funding for the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program came largely at the request of former Democratic Senator Harry Reid, long known for his enthusiasm for space phenomena. As part of his decision to leave the Pentagon, he not only sought the release of videos but also penned a letter to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis complaining that a potential security threat was being ignored. "Stevens knows about it, Inouye knows about it". In 1947, the US Air Force began probing more than 12,000 UFO sightings before it was officially ended in 1969. The program's funding, Reid believed, should not have not been debated publicly in Congress.

A retired Navy pilot contacted by The Post who was involved in a 2004 encounter depicted in one of the videos confirmed that the images accurately reflected his recollection of the events.

The Times reported that the program yielded documents describing sightings of unidentified flying aircraft and video of encounters between unknown objects and USA military aircraft. As the pilots attempted to chase the aircraft it turned toward to the jets only to take a position behind them in a few moments in what Mellon called "a series tumbling maneuvers that seem to defy the laws of physics". This hitherto unknown fact has come to light despite repeated denials by the United States defence department, according to the New York Times.

Speaking at the conference in October, Elizondo told the public that during the years of managing the program he became convinced that "the [UFO] phenomena is indeed real". He said the program was "one of the good things" he did while in office. "I've done something that no one has done before", he told the Times. He said he was quitting in protest of internal opposition to the program as well as the dwindling attention that was paid to their findings.
