Rajouri: Three Indian Army soldiers including an officer were killed and two others sustained injuries after their patrol party was attacked allegedly by Pakistan Rangers at Keri area along the Line of Control in Nowshera sector of Rajouri district on Saturday.

The Indian army named the dead officer as Major Moharkar Prafulla Ambadas, while the injured soldiers as Lance Naik Gurmail Singh and Sepoy Pargat Singh of 16 Corps, Defence spokesperson Colonel NN Joshi confirmed.

A number of BAT attempts have also been foiled by the forces even as the Army has issued clear instructions to the units on the border that they should strike Pakistani posts trying to push terrorists into India or preparing for any ambush against Indian soldiers.

A spokesperson for the Pakistani army did not immediately react to this accusation.

India has stressed that any collateral damage in the cross-border firings is due to the Pakistan army's "unacceptable" support to cross-border terrorism and infiltration as well as its strategy to deploy civilians at forward posts to gain intelligence and act as guides to terrorists crossing the LoC. In a strongly worded press statement, the Indian Army warned Pakistan saying martyrdom of Indian soldiers will not go in vain.

According to Indian officials, over 600 incidents of cease-fire violations were recorded along the LoC and the International Border (IB) since the beginning of this year.

Joshi said Army retaliated strongly and effectively to the ceasefire violation by Pakistani troops.

Sources said the Pakistani troops fired indiscriminately on army positions for half an hour.

Major Moharkar Prafulla Ambadas, aged 32 years, belonged to Bhandara district in Maharashtra and is survived by his wife Avoli Moharkar.

Sepoy Pargat Singh (30) belonged to Karnal district in Haryana and is survived by wife Ramanpreet Kaur and a son, the Army said.

The latest violation of ceasefire took place at a time when the chief minister was at the Rajouri district headquarters.

Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti and Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh paid tributes to the slain soldiers.
