Guatemala to move embassy in Israel to Jerusalem in Trump's wake

Speaking about Trump's decision to make Israel the capital of Palestine, Salman said that the municipality held a press conference the day before, with church clerics, to assure rejection of the decision.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose foreign policy has lately focused on boosting diplomatic ties with Africa, Latin America and Asia, told CNN over the weekend that it may "take about 10 years before the absurd automatic majority against Israel may change".

In a post on his official Facebook account Sunday, Morales said that after talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he made a decision to instruct Guatemala's foreign ministry to move the embassy.

"Long live the friendship between Guatemala and Israel", he added in Spanish.

"We insist on continuing the struggle against the occupation and till we have Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine".

"We have a Christian way of thinking that, as well as the politics of it, has us believing that Israel is our ally and we must support it".

Donald Trump upended decades of U.S. policy with his December 6 announcement that he was recognising Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

The country became the first to follow the United States in this regard after the US President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital. "One of the most important topics [of the conversation] was the return of the embassy of Guatemala to Jerusalem".

"The US has said something else that is very important: The root of the general conflict in the Middle East does not lie in Israel, but in Iran and in radical Islam and the terrorism that it inspires", Netanyahu said, adding that "these are the true reasons that have been revealed to everyone" and "whoever sees clearly and has integrity can not deny them".

The resolution passed by the General Assembly declared the US action on Jerusalem "null and void".

The 128-9 vote was a victory for Palestinians, but fell short of the total they had predicted. Thirty-five nations abstained and 21 stayed away from the vote.

Guatemala was among only eight countries to join the United States on Thursday in voting against the resolution. The holy city has been at the centre of peace-making efforts for decades.
