Thomas Fire now considered largest in California history

Thomas Fire largest wildfire in California history at 273400 acres

A California wildfire that has killed two people and seared its way through cities, towns and wilderness northwest of Los Angeles became the largest blaze ever officially recorded in California on Friday, authorities said.

Earlier this week 300 Oregon firefighters deployed to California through the Oregon Office of the State Fire Marshal came home and were demobilized.

Meanwhile, the Creek fire, which has scorched more than 15,000 acres east of Sylmar, is nearing 100% containment, officials said. The red line represents uncontrolled fire edge.

Cause of the blaze, which began near Thomas Aquinas College north of Santa Paula, remained under investigation amid reports that investigators were looking at Southern California Edison Co equipment.

The Thomas fire has swept through 273,400 acres in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties since December 4 and is still only 65 percent contained, according to a report released by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group. Thanks to shorter days and a lack of strong winds the Incident Management Team does not expect any additional significant spread of the fire, other than strategic burning to secure the fire edge. That area is still shown as uncontrolled on the Team's map.

That prescribed burn will keep adding acreage to the fire, with more than one fire official suggesting to Noozhawk that the final tally could exceed 300,000 acres.

There are now no mandatory evacuation orders in effect.
