"We apologize", the company said in a statement released Thursday. Apple said the problem was that aging lithium batteries delivered power unevenly, which could cause iPhones to shutdown unexpectedly to protect the delicate circuits inside.
It's been a tough last few months for Apple. iOS 11 introduced myriad bugs that required multiple subsequent patches, HomePod missed its launch this year, and then it had to deal with public outcry on battery and performance throttling.
The cost to replace a battery on an out of warranty iPhone is being reduced by $50 to $29.
"We are hoping to get some answers on whether Apple intentionally restricted the performance of old iPhones and tried to hide this from customers", said the Korea Communications Commission. Apple explains that aged batteries can result in random shutdowns, and to avoid such shutdowns, the company throttles a phone's peak performance, according to a newly published support article. A number of people have filed lawsuits over the feature and are seeking class action status.
In a statement today, the company emphasized that it would never "do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product".
Customers are upset with the company over a software update that deliberately slowed down older phones in some situations to extend battery life.

Apple is now facing eight lawsuits over its iPhone slowdown practice, and one of those suits is seeking almost $1 trillion in damages.
Speed issues with older iPhones were recently highlighted by Reddit users, who found that when they replaced the batteries in their devices, they returned to normal performance. Apple also will include a new feature in its next operating system update that lets iPhone users check the health of their iPhone's battery.
The company's announcement said, in part, that batteries become less effective as they "chemically age" and their ability to hold a charge diminishes.
In addition to the discounted battery offer, Apple said it also plans to roll out an iOS update early next year that will better allow iPhone owners to monitor the health of their battery and to understand if its affecting their phone's performance.
