AT&T says all 50 states have opted into first responder network FirstNet

FirstNet Media Kits | First Responder Network Authority

First responders across the United States now have access to FirstNet after all 50 states, two territories and Washington, D.C. opted into the network.

AT&T will build the FirstNet RAN in "opt-in" states or territories at no cost to each jurisdiction, although local public-safety entities will be responsible for paying subscription costs and end-user device expenses. The decision was made, the governor said, because of the risk associated with being the only state to opt-out of the network. "I am grateful for their work, and look forward to continuing ahead with AT&T to ensure our first responders have the best tools available to them in times of crisis".

AT&T says that it will ultimately spend $40 billion to build out the network, which it calls "FirstNet".

"Following our decision to opt-out and go with the Rivada plan that provides better coverage, more system control and an opportunity to share in the revenue streams of the business, we proceeded to have extensive discussions with other governors across the country to help them understand the benefits of such a system", Sununu said.

Governor Sununu stated he believed the decision deadline of December 28 approached too rapidly for states to feel confident in an opt-out decision, and he did not want New Hampshire to be the only one with an independent network. "Due to their vision and hard fought efforts, I can proudly say that this lifesaving network is now a reality across America; FirstNet is going to enhance the safety and security of our first responders and the people they serve".

As part of the agreement, AT&T will use federal funding to build new cell towers around the state that will help improve existing cell phone service in many rural and tribal areas. All are participating, and American Samoa, Guam, and Northern Marianas Islands get until March 12, 2018 to decide. "It's an honor to help bring FirstNet to MS and to its dedicated public-safety community".
