Afghanistan explosion: Shia organisation hit in Kabul

CNN reports nearly 100 people were at the cultural center at the time for the anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

ISIS claimed responsibility for Thursday's deadly attack on a Shiite cultural center in Kabul.

Women, children and journalists were among the dead, and most of the injured suffered from burns, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Health said.

Local media reported an explosion early on Thursday.

Community members said numerous people inside the center at the time were educated young people and children taking religious classes.

Ten people were also killed in a suicide bomb attack near the compound of Afghanistan's intelligence agency in Kabul on Monday.

"The suicide attack happened in the middle of the meeting, then fire broke out all around and then I don't remember how we got out", said one survivor, Rabia. "Our mutual enemies must know they will not win and the Afghan people will not be silenced", said the mission, which comprises mostly American troops.

The Taliban have issued a statement saying they were not involved. "Today in Kabul we have witnessed another truly despicable crime in a year already marked by unspeakable atrocities". In October, ISIS claimed responsibility for twin attacks on Shiite mosques in Afghanistan that killed almost 60 people.

Deputy interior ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi told AFP that the main blast was followed by two smaller bomb explosions that did not cause any casualties, and that the death toll is not final and "might" go up. He said one reporter at the agency had been killed and one injured.

The Taliban and rebels aligned with the Islamic State militant group have carried out a series of terrorist attacks.

The attack took place at about 10.30am local time.

Security in Afghanistan is rapidly deteriorating following the withdrawal of global forces from the country 3 years ago.
