Dangerously cold temperatures return this weekend

Monday (New Year's Day): Brutal wind chills well below 0 in the morning.

Dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills continue to filter into the area through the weekend. The wind chill will range anywhere from -10 to -15 degrees. Expect frigid temperatures and potentially unsafe wind chills for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

Anyone venturing outside this New Year's weekend should be very aware of the risky wind chills and frigid temperatures in Madison. With wind chills from -10 to -20 Sunday and Monday morning, frost bite will be possible on exposed skin within 30 minutes.

Take a look at the timing of wind chills as we head into the evening.

Temperatures will moderate some through the week ahead with high temperatures returning to the 20s.

Some areas could see a flurry or sleet pellet floating by Saturday night but as we get to about 3 a.m.to 4 a.m. Sunday morning, snow chances increase.

Sunday Night: Clear. Wind chills from -15 to -25. High temperatures even under sunny skies will be lucky to reach the 5 degree mark, perhaps establishing a new record-cold high temperature for January 1 - the standing record of 5 degrees was set back in 1969.

Tonight: Partly cloudy. Wind: NE 10-15; gusty.

Tuesday night: Mostly cloudy, low around 6.

Fri: Hi: 28 Lo: 13 Sunny.
