Customs System "Disruption" Halts Major Airports

Customs Computer Outage CBP Customs and Border Protection Airports Travel Long Lines

The agency said in a statement that it "experienced a temporary outage with its processing systems at various airports" that began at around 7:30 p.m. and lasted until 9:30 p.m.

An outage affecting the computer systems of the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) left worldwide travelers waiting in long lines at airports throughout the country.

During the disruption, CBP had access to national security-related databases and all travelers were screened according to security standards.

The outage on Monday night affected airports including New York's JFK, San Francisco and Denver, as global travellers arrived from holiday travels on New Year's Day, reports CNN.

A few minutes later, another tweet said the customs processing issue was resolved. All the airports involved are now back online, according to CBP, though some are still experiencing effects from the outage.

The technological failure was caused by an apparent computer outage affecting passport control, with travelers reporting that kiosk machines at customs were not working.

"CBP took immediate action to address the technology disruption", the CBP added. Eastern time forced Customs and Border Protection officers to process arriving passengers using backup procedures at some airports.

According to the CBS News, there were up to 2,000 passengers stuck in lines at the Miami International Airport.
