Turning drier for a time this afternoon with a few showers, but further rain and strong wind arriving later.

There will be a risk of "injuries and danger to life" from flying debris and large waves along the western coast, the warning said.

The full force of Storm Eleanor is now forecast to hit the East Midlands earlier than expected.

The Met Office said the storm, part of an unsettled low-pressure system, will hit the United Kingdom tonight, and continue to rage on Wednesday, bringing snow across higher ground and rain for the rest of us, as well as gales.

Public transport may be disrupted or cancelled and some bridges are likely to be closed. Road conditions can quickly deteriorate during very heavy rainfall, with drains becoming swamped or blocked and standing water causing surface spray, reduced visibility and potentially leading to flooding.

"Gusts of 50 to 60mph are likely quite widely within the warning area, whilst gusts of 70 to 80mph may affect exposed coastal areas in the west and south". They will continue to monitor the situation and issue Flood Alerts should the need arise.

Officials say: "Late on Tuesday and during Wednesday, local coastal flooding is possible but not expected for parts of southern England, Cumbria and Wales".

The Environment Agency has warned that strong winds and high tides could bring coastal flooding until Thursday.
