HP issues safety recall for laptop batteries

US-TECHNOLOGY-HP

In January 2018, in cooperation with various government regulatory agencies, HP announced a worldwide voluntary safety recall and replacement program for certain notebook computer and mobile workstation batteries.

The tech giant said it had received eight reports of those batteries "overheating, melting, or charring", which included property damage and burns. HP estimates that around 50,000 units sold in the United States have bad batteries, plus another 2,600 in the Canada.

Multiple devices are affected by the recall, including products in the HP Probook 64x, ProBook 65x, x360 310, Envy, Pavilion, and ZBook lineups. However, since the batteries in these laptops are not meant to be replaced by consumers, HP will send an authorized technician to replace the battery properly. For the most part, HP notes the affected batteries are non-replaceble, which is a current trend among increasing thin and light laptops.

HP has recalled some laptop and mobile workstation batteries due to an overheating problem. One person reportedly suffered a first-degree burn to the hand.

If the above list and reference table still leaves you in some doubt whether your system is affected or not, HP has created a special Battery Program Validation Utility.

HP has issued instructions for using its battery validation tool to check if your laptop is impacted. That will prevent the battery from overheating.

Batteries affected by this recall should immediately be put into "Battery Safety Mode".
