World leaders will not be banned from Twitter

In its statement, Twitter said that the company existed to "serve and help advance the global, public conversation" and therefore would not remove content from elected world leaders. "It would also not silence that leader, but it would certainly hamper necessary discussion around their words and actions".

The company also sought to counter assertions that controversial figures like Trump were kept on the platform largely because they helped Twitter's bottom line.

The comments prompted complaints that Twitter was providing Mr Trump with a "bully pulpit" and the president contravened its terms and conditions that addressed violence and threats.

But Twitter reiterated its stance, saying: "Elected world leaders play a critical role in that conversation due to their outsized impact on our society".

Twitter said then that it considered the president's tweet "newsworthy".

Many critics said they believed Trump's recent posts violated Twitter's terms of service, which prohibit messages that threaten violence, death or physical harm.

A Facebook event for the protest accuses Dorsey of "endangering the world" and violating its own rules by not banning Trump after he tweeted that his nuclear button is "much bigger" and "more powerful" than North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's.

On Tuesday, the US president Tweeted about his "nuclear button," saying his is "a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!"

In an interview with USA broadcaster Voice of America, Pence said the president's leadership on the world stage has resulted in "measurable progress", especially on the issue of North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs. "We review tweets by leaders within the political context that defines them, and enforce our rules accordingly", the statement said. No one person's account drives Twitter's growth, or influences these decisions. "We work hard to remain unbiased with the public interest in mind", it added.

"The View" hosts were discussing the President's tweet to Kim Jong Un earlier this week, when the Commander-in-Chief warned the dictator that he too has a "nuclear button", but unlike Kim's, his "button works".
