Beacon officer among four dead after avalanche hits vehicle in Kashmir

Kupwara (Jammu and Kashmir), Jan 06 (ANI): At least nine people went missing after an avalanche hit the Kupwara-Tangdhar road in Jammu and Kashmir, on Friday afternoon.

An official on Friday said that bad weather was hampering search and rescue operation.

"A passenger was pulled out of the snow in the early hours of Saturday morning, while a child was rescued soon after the accident last evening".

After avalanches swept away two Sumo jeeps at Khoni Nallah near Sadhna Top in Tangdar sector of north Kashmir's Kupwara district, rescuers were sent to find the bodies buried in the avalanche.

Officials said that the Rashid is now undergoing treatment at District Hospital Kupwara while Bhat has been shifted to SKIMS Soura for specialized treatment.

Local sources in the area said that Sadhna Top is one of the far-flung areas of the Valley and people there have always been demanding a tunnel to make safe their travel in winter. Police sources said that three bodies, two of them of females, were recovered by a rescue team comprising of police, SDRF, JAKLI and RR personnel, besides local volunteers. "His body has been recovered", he said.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today expressed grief and sorrow over the incident, an official spokesman said. The Chief Minister expressed sympathies with the bereaved families and prayed for solace to the departed souls.

The spokesman said the chief minister directed the Kupwara district administration to ensure all possible medical assistance to the injured.
