UN Security Council rebuffs the U.S. over Iran protests

US warns Iran at United Nations says the world will be watching

America's ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, said the meeting showed Iran that "the world will be watching" its actions.

Iran's Ambassador Gholamali Khoshroo slammed the meeting as a "farce" and a "waste of time" and said the council should instead focus on addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict or the war in Yemen. These protests were followed on Saturday and Wednesday by large demonstrations in support of the government.

Haley accused the government of funding a pro-regime military campaign in Syria, backing Shiite militias in Iraq and supporting a crony elite while ordinary Iranians struggle.

Haley said that "in the end, the Iranian people will determine their own destiny", and she reiterated U.S. support for the protesters.

"Despite the many attempts to distort what is really going on (in Iran), I am sure that our neighbor, our friend, will overcome its current difficulties", Ryabkov said.

The United States called the meeting despite fierce criticism from Russian Federation, which accused Washington of interfering in Iran's internal affairs.

Every other member of the body, including U.S. allies, voted in favor of a proposal affirming global opposition to recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, days after President Donald Trump did so and declared the USA would one day move its embassy from Tel Aviv to the contested holy city. The UN General Assembly on the same issue, passing a non-binding resolution disapproving of the Trump administration's decision.Ahead of the general assembly vote, Haley the United States was "taking names" of those voting against the USA, and afterward, she held a party where the only countries invited were nations that did not support the resolution on Jerusalem.Trump praised Haley's actions before he left the White House for Christmas."Let them vote against us. The world will be watching what you do", Haley said.

The Iranian government restricted access to social media at the height of the protests over the weekend, but many Iranians also use VPNs so the government can not track their online activity.

In the following days, however, the protests appeared to turn into anti-government rallies, spreading to Tehran, Kermanshah, Sanandaj, Zanjan, Ahvaz and Arak provinces. Since the demonstrations began six days back, at least 21 people have been killed - including a police officer - while hundreds more have reportedly been detained. When the rights of the people are denied, the people rightly resist.

Trump's repeated tweets backing protesters during Iran's unrest were rebuffed by marchers on Friday.

But the Europeans - who negotiated the nuclear agreement along with the United States, Russia and China - have reacted more cautiously by expressing support for the protesters without antagonizing the government with strident condemnation.

"We don't want to get involved in destabilizing Iran or any other country", he said.

"Iran's domestic affairs have nothing to do with the United Nations Security Council's role".
