Winter session of Parliament on last day, triple talaq bill in limbo

Winter Session Of Parliament Ends Triple Talaq Bill Pushed To Budget Session

One of the shortest winter sessions of Parliament that ended on Friday was also among the least fruitful as the government failed to get important legislations such as the bill banning instant talaq and the one giving constitutional status to the National Commission for Backward Classes passed.

The BJP MPs have been repeatedly saying that any issue that needs to be raised on the bill should be spoken on the floor of the House and discussed in the presence of the entire Rajya Sabha, she claimed.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day today amid uproar by opposition without any decision on triple talaq bill.

The triple talaq bill is listed in the Rajya Sabha's agenda today, but, with a deadlock between the government and opposition continuing, may not come up, thus allowing it to be deferred to the budget session.

The Congress and other parties - including BJP ally Telugu Desam Party and the AIADMK and Biju Janata Dal called further scrutiny of the bill by a select committee of the house. The Congress and the opposition parties, which have numbers in their favour in the upper house, want the proposed legislation to be sent before a select committee, but the BJP has rejected the demand.

The united opposition primarily voiced concern over the provision for a jail term.

Talking to reporters here, AICC senior spokesperson and Leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said, "the Government is misleading 120 crore people of the country on the Bill". They have argued that if a man who abandons his family goes to jail, he will not be able to provide financial support for them.

"They are not thinking about ensuring justice to the Muslim sisters".

Both houses of Parliament adjourns sine die ending the winter session.

It has said that the Congress is against the bill.

"Our effort is to ensure a smooth passage of the bill..."
