Packers hiring Brian Gutekunst as general manager

Packers officially announce Brian Gutekunst as new GM

Gutekunst was in the running to replace Ted Thompson in Green Bay, so it can not be ruled out that he will be promoted to general manager.

The new Packers GM played two years of college football for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse until a shoulder injury cut his college career short.

The Packers are finalizing a five-year deal with director of player personnel Brian Gutekunst to make him the team's next general manager, Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of report. The Houston Texans flew him in Saturday and planned to interview him for their vacancy on Sunday, but he took the job in Green Bay instead.

Gutekunst has spent 19 years working in the Packers' personnel department.

Gutekunst has been with the Packers almost 20 years, joining the franchise in late 1998.

They swung for the fences first by requesting to interview Seattle Seahawks GM John Schneider, but they were turned down.

The Packers have not officially announced a hiring.

Gutekunst was one of several in-house candidates to replace Thompson as GM. In addition to Gutekunst's promotion, another familiar face, Joe Philbin, is reportedly returning for a second stint under coach Mike McCarthy after serving as offensive coordinator from 2007-2011.
