Class act: La. teacher handcuffed at school board meeting

"A superintendent or any person in a position of leadership getting any type of raise, I feel like it's a slap in the face to all the teachers, cafeteria workers, and any other support staff we have", Ms Hargrave noted.

The officer, an Abbeville city marshal, demands she "stop resisting" and she states, "I am not, you just pushed me to the floor". Handcuffs were later placed on Hargrave as she was removed from the building.

Board members complained that the meeting was to discuss the superintendent's contract, not teacher pay. The Constitution prohibits the government from punishing or retaliating against people for expressing their views, and the fact that a schoolteacher was arrested at a public meeting of the school board is especially troubling. The board does not plan to press charges against the teacher.

"Sir, hold on, I am way smaller than you!" Ms Hargrave did not appear to be raising her voice during the meeting.

"I have reviewed the video and I am not going to approve any charges against the teacher", Funderburk told KATC.

KATC reports that following Hargrave's comments, board president Anthony Fontana ruled that she was out of order and warned her that the public comment section was not a question-and-answer session.

Her removal did not go unnoticed, and one female board member said, "What happened here tonight".

"I personally apologize for the Vermilion Parish School Board", she said, adding, "This is a sad day for Vermilion Parish".

Following the freakish - and violent - arrest, Vermilion Parish School Board Superintendent Jerome Puyau told the local news outlet the district won't press charges against Hargrave.

A Louisiana English teacher's criticism of the superintendent's $38,000 raise was met with handcuffs and a trip to jail. A teacher's union lawyer is investigating the incident, according to the AP.
