Trump dossier author's blackmail concerns

President-elect Donald Trump during a news conference in the lobby of Trump Tower in New York

Steele told the Federal Bureau of Investigation that he believed the Russians would use information to "blackmail" then-candidate Donald Trump-and later learned that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had heard similar claims from a Trump campaign member, the head of the campaign research firm Fusion GPS told Congress in testimony made public on Tuesday.

The second involved a decision by Democrat Senator Diane Feinstein of California to release the Congressional transcripts of Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson.

"There is simply no reason to keep the Simpson testimony (or other testimony before our committee for that matter) hidden while this distraction goes on". "The transcript of Glenn Simpson's lengthy responses to the Senate Judiciary Committee's questioning speaks for itself".

The demand comes one week after Grassley and Sen.

A spokesman for Grassley called Feinstein's move "totally confounding" and done without consultation. "The only way to set the record straight is to make the transcript public".

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein released a transcript of the interview on Tuesday, after repeated disagreements with Republicans on the committee.

Both Hillary Clinton's campaign and the DNC hired Fusion GPS for its opposition research services during the 2016 campaign.

I'm Proud We Published the Trump-Russia Dossier

The Washington research firm has been under attack by the White House and Republican lawmakers over the dossier, which is central to investigations in Congress and by a federal special counsel into allegations that Russian Federation interfered in the election to help Trump win, and any potential collusion by the Trump campaign.

Simpson's firm paid Steele to compile the opposition research dossier on Trump and Russian Federation. "So, you know, that tells you something about somebody", Simpson said during the testimony, regarding Trump's relationship with Sater.

"It was someone like us who chose to pick up the phone and report something", he said, adding that he believed the source was "voluntary", and "was concerned about the same concerns we had".

Simpson declined to name the apparent campaign source. He wouldn't put words in their mouth, " the transcript says. "Somebody's already been killed as a result of the publication of this dossier and no harm should come to anybody related to this honest work", said the lawyer, Joshua Levy.

Levy did not expand on that claim in the interview, nor is there any public information that would tie a specific killing to information in the dossier.

A representative for Fusion GPS did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. But Simpson's comments appear to confirm that the FBI did not launch its Trump-Russia investigation just because of the dossier.

The Iowa Republican, who chairs the Judiciary Committee, responded by saying he didn't want to compromise the committee's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. He also offered to have Simpson testify publicly.
