London Mayor Sadiq Khan: 'Donald Trump Is Not Welcome Here'

US President Donald Trump has cancelled his trip to Britain due to disappointment over a "bad" US embassy.

Trump said on Twitter he canceled the visit because the USA embassy's former location was sold at a "bad deal".

President Donald Trump tweeted late Thursday night that the new us embassy in London, slated to open its doors next Tuesday, is in an "off location" of the city. "Bad deal. Wanted me to cut ribbon-NO", he said.

Last month, PM Theresa May's cabinet minister Sam Gyimah had said he would feel "deeply uncomfortable" if President Trump's visit went ahead after May clashed with Trump over USA president retweets of far-right anti-Muslim propaganda, Britain First.

The new embassy will be moving from 24 Grosvenor Square to Nine Elms in south London - a decision that was made by the Bush administration.

However, London's Mayor, Sadiq Khan, claimed Mr. Trump had "got the message" that he was not welcome in London. "Let's hope that Donald Trump also revisits the pursuit of his divisive agenda", he added. "And you got the message".

The trip was eventually downgraded to a less formal "working visit", which meant Trump would visit the United Kingdom but would not be a guest of the Queen.

In 2009, the Obama State Department agreed to sell the Grosvenor Square building where the US embassy was located to the Qatar royal family.

There are reports that the ribbon may now be cut by USA secretary of state Rex Tillerson instead.

The president and the prime minister have a very, very good relationship. It said any official state visit should be axed "because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty, the Queen".

But many commentators believe Trump was instead put off by the prospect of significant protests during his visit with the potential for disruption, negative publicity and embarrassment as the real reason for his continuing avoidance of the UK. However, the promotion of far-right group Britain First on Twitter was particularly sensitive in the country too.

"I am personally deeply uncomfortable about it", then-Justice Minister Sam Gyimah said.

"An invitation has been extended and accepted [for Trump's visit]" a spokesperson said at a briefing attended by Business Insider. Unrest during the president's visit would be an embarrassment for the United States, which has been one of the U.K.'s closest allies for a century.
