Porn-Laden Gaming Apps Infiltrate Google Play

Time for a conversation about dictionaries at the very least

Dubbed "AdultSwine", the malware hides inside game apps that Google Play data says have been downloaded 3 to 7 million times, Check Point said in blog post on Friday.

Along with encouraging users to download scareware and pay for premium services, AdultSwine also stole users' credentials, according to Check Point.

Stories about malware apps living in Google Play aren't new, but the reason why this is concerning is that the primary target of these gaming apps are mostly kids.

The malicious app is called Adult Swine, and Check Point said that the big displays inappropriate and pornographic ads, which are attempts to trick users into installing face security apps, and also attempts to get users to sign up for premium services that are charged directly to the user's account. The researchers noted that the malicious app prefers not to show ads in browsers and social networking apps to avoid suspicion. The apps may have been taken off the Google Play store, but the malware will remain on an infected phone. That includes displaying the bogus ads, scaring users to insecurity fake security apps and charging victims for services they didn't request or receive. Some of the removed games have been downloaded over 1 million times, like Five Nights Survival Craft and McQueen Car Racing Game, based on the Disney Pixar character from the film Cars.

However, the tech giant acted immediately and kicked the apps out of Google Play Store.

Apps infected with the nasty "AdultSwine" malicious code are able to cause emotional and financial distress.

The new policy would require apps to work as standalone Wear apps and force Wear APKs to be uploaded to the Play Store as a multi-APK instead of bundling them within phone apps.

A Google spokesperson confirmed that the apps named by the security firm were removed, and the developers' accounts were disabled.

Apple's App Store does contend with malware but, due in large part to tighter restrictions and a far smaller number of apps and users, the iOS App Store appears to be hit less frequently with malware outbreaks than its Android counterpart.
