Alexa Can Now Send Texts: Here's How

Just ask Alexa to "Send a message" and it will attempt to send it to the recipient's Alexa devices or via SMS with a written transcript and link to the audio file (see below), which lasts for 24 hours.

Earlier this month, Amazon that it would be rolling out Alexa Onboard, which lets users access Alexa from inside a auto. Turns out, when Cardi B opens the box she's received in her clip above, she finds a headset, puts it on, and is transformed into Alexa, Amazon's home assistant. So, if you want to issue an SMS voice command to your Echo, you'll only have the option of sending it to those who have Android devices.

Thanks to this latest software update, users will likely be able to ask Alexa to send texts while they drive, too.

Gadget makers are flocking to create smart speakers. Amazon is likely hoping the exposure will help it maintain strong Echo sales and fend off competition from Google and Apple.

As the minute-and-a-half ad unfolds, Alexa users discover that instead of Alexa's neutral, semi-robotic tones, their requests to, say, get a recipe for grilled cheese are met by celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey, while he hurls abusive remarks at them about their inabilities to cook.

In 2016, Amazon announced the Echo Dot - a small, puck-like speaker with a voice assistant built in that could play music, answer simple questions, or do a range of other things through applications. However, now we know what the company was aiming for, for it to be used like a phone.

Google's Assistant software is also able to answer follow-up questions on the same topic, in a near-conversation style, but Echo as yet can not.

A light comes on to remind you that it's listening.
