Who Is Bruce McArthur? Suspected Serial Killer Accused Of 5 Murders

Bruce McArthur has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder connected to the cases of missing men in Toronto's Church-Wellesley Village.

Toronto police said they had laid a total of five charges of first-degree murder against Bruce McArthur, 66.

McArthur was charged earlier this month with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of 44-year-old Selim Esen and 49-year-old Andrew Kinsman, before Toronto Det.

Hank Idsinga said that the alleged killer had worked on covering up the murders, which meant that additional searches were needed.

Police are searching other properties where McArthur has done landscaping work, he said. While he could not say exactly how many victims will ultimately be identified in the case, Idsinga said he expects the number will rise. McArthur was arrested and charged on January 18 for the murders of Selim Esen, 44, and Andrew Kinsman, 49. "I'd call it an unprecedented type of investigation", Idsinga said. A dozen other planters have been seized as evidence.

Idsinga did not provide any details about a possible relationship between McArthur and any of the three new victims.

"We've identified some areas where the earth has been disturbed, so we're going to be looking in those areas", he said.

Kevin Nash says McArthur "came into the picture" of Navaratnam's life in 1999 and that the pair began a romantic relationship that lasted until at least 2008.

"Obviously the city of Toronto has never seen anything like this". They said they were planning to excavate at two locations "where people might be buried", but said they did not know what, if anything, they might find.

McArthur seems to have encountered money problems in the late '90s, first mortgaging the Oshawa house in 1997 and then declaring bankruptcy in 1999.

All this gives McArthur the infamous title of serial killer. "If there is an indication from the canine units that there is some decomposition around that planter, we will grab it", Idsinga said on Wednesday.

The charges against McArthur have not been proven in court.

While Liddle said McArthur sometimes had a younger man helping him with the gardening work, police said they had no evidence anyone else was involved in any of the alleged crimes.

At least one of the male victims were said to have associated with Gay Village, a primarily gay neighborhood in Montreal, Québec. But sources close to the probe say investigators had their reasons for not mentioning the shocking discovery, including protecting an individual who likely had no idea about the allegations against the landscaper.
