Replay of the launch of GovSat 1 aboard a Falcon 9 rocket

Watch Live Stream: SpaceX Launch Of Falcon Rocket With GovSat Payload

The rocket is set to launch the GovSat-1 satellite to geostationary orbit, said a release.

The Falcon 9 sent up a satellite that will provide secure communications for the government of Luxembourg.

GovSat CEO Patrick Biewer said the satellite is created to meet government clients' requirements and support defense and civilian security missions even in remote areas.

Thirty-four minutes after liftoff, the satellite was successfully released into a highly elliptical "parking" orbit, according to SpaceX.

SpaceX flew a mission today that didn't include a controlled recovery attempt of the Falcon 9 booster involved in the launch.

The first of the Falcon 9 rocket had already flown in a year ago in May carrying the National Reconnaissance Office's classified NROL-76 payload. Informing this, Musk Twitted "This rocket was meant to test very high retro thrust landing in water, so it didn't hurt the drone-ship, but amazingly it has survived". However, SpaceX announced prior to the GovSat-1 launch that it would make no attempt for its safe return, despite it doing so last May on another mission.

SpaceX's SLC-40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station is located at the north end of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and is a launch site with a strong heritage that was used for many years to launch Titan rockets, among the most powerful in the USA fleet.

Incredibly, the booster somehow managed to pull off that three engine landing burn with some success, made apparent by the fact that it is intact and floating in the Atlantic, with some hope of being towed back to land.

The company launched a recycled Falcon 9 on Wednesday from Cape Canaveral in Florida.

The LuxGovSat S.S.is a public-private joint venture between the Luxembourg government and Luxembourg-based telecommunications company SES, in part to fulfill that nation's growing defense obligations to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. With the ability to lift into orbit over 54 metric tons (119,000 lb) - a mass equivalent to a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage and fuel - Falcon Heavy can lift more than twice the payload of the next closest operational vehicle, the Delta IV Heavy, at one-third the cost. "GovSat and the launch of GovSat-1 is another step towards strengthening the position of Luxembourg as a key player in the aerospace sector, and contributes to a diversification of our economy".

This is the first launch for SpaceX since it launched the top-secret Zuma payload that reportedly went awry with the payload never making it to orbit.
