Italian gunman targeted immigrants after Nigerian man was arrested for killing

Italy shooting

He wounded at least four and as many as six people, all said to be African migrants.

The ruling center-left Democratic Party said Traini also fired shots at one of their offices in Macerata on Saturday, reports Reuters.

An Italian man who has been politically active with the anti-migrant Northern League has been arrested in the drive-by shootings that wounded six people.

Italian media identified the man as Luca Traini, 28, and said he was a member of the far-right anti-immigration Northern League party, who had run in local elections a year ago. The Nigerian suspect, who was denied asylum previous year but has remained in Italy, has refused to talk to police.

A 29-year-old Nigerian male migrant has been detained over the killing of Pamela Mastropietro. "There is an armed man in a auto who is shooting in the city", Mayor Romano Carancini said in a statement posted on local Facebook sites.

OFFICIALS in a central Italian city have confirmed that a suspect in a drive-by shooting against foreigners has been apprehended.

He made a fascist salute, according to local reports.

Police haven't said how many people have been wounded in the shootings.

There are reportedly two people in the vehicle - a black Alfa Romeo - who are still on the run.

The newspaper Corriere Adriatico said shooting occurred in the town of Macerata, which is located about 200km east of Rome.

"What was this maggot still doing in Italy?"

"There's an armed man in a auto shooting in town", Carancini said in a Facebook post.

"The left has blood on its hands", Salvini wrote in a Facebook post about the incident.

Right-wing politicians have been using Pamela Mastropietro's killing to promote their anti-migrant message as part of their campaign for the general election.

"Whoever, like Salvini, exploits news events and tragedies for electoral purposes is among those responsible for the spiral of hatred and violence that we must stop as soon as possible", Grasso said.
