IPhones headed for a chip change in 2018

Apple's iPhone X as seen in its official site

Even that, though, was a compromise, given Apple and Qualcomm's previous agreement. Qualcomm had also sought a ban on iPhone X in the US.

This all comes during a nasty bout between Apple and Qualcomm, the latter of which has provided at least a share of modems for past iPhones.

There is also a risk that Intel might not be ready for 5G networking as quickly as Qualcomm, which might also force Apple's hand.

Apple reported last week another record quarter in terms of revenue and profits, but the markets were not too impressed, causing the share price to head south and slip into correction territory.

Apple will likely drop Qualcomm as a supplier and only use Intel LTE modems for its next generation iPhones, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

A report in 9to5mac said that Intel's chip will support dual SIM and dual standby. Talking about Intel, Samsung recently overtook the USA chipmaker in its own game of chip making for the first time in 25 years, making former the world's biggest processor-making firm.

This prediction by Kuo is slightly different from what he made previously. For users, it would mean greater flexibility in moving between networks: now there's no guarantee that the iPhone you buy from one carrier will necessarily have the band support for a different one. Apple must be feeling the heat with the upcoming Galaxy S9 with the Exynos 9 chip inside which is also promising lightning-fast cellular connectivity. "Volumes were still enough to push Apple past Samsung and back into first place in the smartphone market, largely because of iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X", notes IDC. This iPhone variant will borrow some features of the iPhone X, including the TrueDepth camera that supports the Face ID and Animoji contents.

That's a big upheaval for Qualcomm to miss out on, though Kuo does point out that any decision for 2018's range isn't necessarily going to be lasting. In fact, Qualcomm was fined 700 million euros just recently for signing a deal with Apple that gives Qualcomm exclusivity with the tech giant.

According to Nomura analyst Romit Shah, Apple would save over $100 million in the next iPhone cycle by moving to cheaper Intel modem chips.
