U.S. 'shamelessly threatening Russian Federation with atomic weapon', says Iran's Rouhani

Trump's Nuclear Report Reaffirms US Commitment to Annihilate Mankind: Iran's FM

Russia, Iran, and China have strongly criticized Washington's newly revealed policy plan to expand USA nuclear weapons capabilities in order to deter other countries.

"The Americans are shamelessly threatening Russian Federation with a new atomic weapon", said Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

In addition Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif earlier warned in a tweet that the U.S. policy risked "bringing humankind closer to annihilation". "Were Iran to decide to acquire nuclear weapons, pressures on other countries in the region to acquire their own nuclear weapons would increase", it said.

There's a place for arms control in the Trump administration's new nuclear strategy.

The US report, titled the National Posture Review (NPR), was released on Friday and claims that developing smaller nuclear weapons would bolster its deterrent.

The Nuclear Posture Review outlined "tailored strategies" for dealing with Russia, China, Iran and North Korea, while also calling for the development of a new "low yield" submarine-launched ballistic missile and a new sub-launched cruise missile.

The NPR posits that the Russians place a premium of nuclear weapons due to Moscow's "de-escalation" doctrine, which is why the administration is seeking to build new types of American non-strategic nuclear arms.

James Acton, a nuclear weapons specialist at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said that offer seems disingenuous.

German foreign minister Sigmar Gabriel said the United States decision showed "the spiral of a new nuclear arms race is already under way" and added that Europe was, much like during the cold war, especially vulnerable.

The United States would spend $1.2 trillion over the next 30 years on the nuclear weapons. "This new policy deliberately blurs the line between nuclear and conventional forces and eliminates a clear firewall", she warned.

"The document's statement that Russia allegedly refuses to further reduce its nuclear capabilities is yet another example of the blatant "falsification", the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

The new USA posture focuses heavily on what the administration sees as an overdue modernization of the nuclear arsenal, the laboratories and plants that support the arsenal, and the far-flung communications and early warning systems that enable the Pentagon to command and control the weapons. "Trump's obduracy in killing the #JCPOA stems from the same unsafe imprudence", Zarif in a message posted on his official Twitter account on Saturday.
