A 6.4 magnitude natural disaster struck 22 km (14 miles) east-northeast of Hua-lien in Taiwan at a depth of 1 km, the U.S Geological Survey said on Tuesday.

The quake hit just before midnight local time, 22km north-northeast of Hua-lien in Taiwan, 9.4km deep, according to the United States Geological Survey. Reports of its depth vary from one kilometre to 10 kilometres.

Premier William Lai said two people had died in the quake in the port city of Hualien and 114 were injured, some seriously.

Describing the scene at the Marshal Hotel, Hsu said the bottom storeys had been crushed.

The quake follows a 6.1 magnitude quake off the coast of Hualien on the east of Taiwan, which lies along the Pacific Rim of Fire.

Images showed the Marshal Hotel leaning over the street, its ground floor caved in.

Maggie Lewis, an American visiting scholar living in Taipei which is two hours away from the epicenter in Hualien City, said people there felt a minor shock. At least three people remain trapped. The quakes continue to jolt the area near Hualien County through early Wednesday morning.

U.S. geologists said it was the latest in a string of quakes to hit the region in recent days.

"We live in Wellington and we have experience a few but this is definitely so much bigger", she said.
