Jammu and Kashmir, Rajouri: 4 Soldiers killed in the attack, one injured

There was "intermittent shelling" through the night by Pakistani troops along the LoC in Rajouri district, Deputy Commissioner (DC), Rajouri, Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary said.

The shelling across the LoC comes two days after Border Security Force personnel in Samba district foiled an infiltration bid from across the International Border.

An official said that Pakistan army fired at Indian positions along the LoC in Shahpur sector of Poonch today morning. In 2018, the Indian forces have carried out more than 190 ceasefire violations along the Line of Control and the Working Boundary, resulting in the deaths of 13 civilians, it said. "(Our) action will speak for itself", Lt Gen Chand said on the sidelines of an event here.

A Defence spokesman said Pakistan Army initiated "unprovoked and indiscriminate" firing of small arms, automatics and mortars around 1110 hours.

- The next army casualty was reported on January 20, when Sepoy Mandeep Singh was killed in Pakistani shelling across the Krishna Ghati sector in J&K.

Those who died included Captain Kapil Kundu, who would have celebrated his 23rd birthday on February 10.

Highlighting the seriousness of the situation, officials said 860 ceasefire violations were recorded for the entire previous year. "And this year the number of ceasefire violations are high", Ahir said.

With an obvious eye on scaling up the already-explosive border situation, Pakistan has started using heavier guns, including 120mm guns, whose indirect fire and parabolic trajectory causes the maximum damage. Ceasefire violations in 2016 were 228 while 152 such incidents took place in 2015. "Pakistan has been violating ceasefire along the LoC".

The border turbulence has claimed 20 lives on the Indian side, including 9 soldiers and 11 civilians.
