Robert Wagner Called Person Of Interest In Natalie Wood Case

Natalie Wood's daughter says stepdad Robert Wagner didn't kill her mum after cops reveal he's a 'person of interest' in

Last week it was revealed that Wagner - the last person to see Wood alive - was a person of interest in the case.

Corina said the original detectives on the case spoke with Wagner about the circumstances surrounding Wood's death only once, in 1981, but Wagner, who will turn 88 on February 10, has declined any further discussions.

"I mean, we know now that he was the last person to be with Natalie before she disappeared".

But investigators now say that Wagner and Davern's accounts of that night have shifted.

"He's a person of interest because he was the last person with her before she went in the water", Corina added.

Although Walken has not been named by investigators, Wood's death has been classified as suspicious and Wagner has been named a person of interest. "We're closer to understanding what happened", said homicide detective John Corina, although no charges are being filed as yet.

Wood's sister, Lana Wood, told Inside Edition that she doesn't believe Wagner has told investigators the full story about what happened on the boat.

Corina did not explain why anyone who might know something didn't come forward in 1981 or in 2011, and whether that failure might undermine their credibility all these decades later. She drowned November 29, 1981, while on a boat off the coast of Santa Catalina, Calif. Investigators at the time believed her death was suspicious - her body had bruises - but ultimately ruled it as accidental. "Mr. Wagner has been interviewed on multiple occasions by the Los Angeles sheriff's department and answered every single question asked of him by detectives during those interviews".

Actress Natalie Wood and actor Ed Asner pose after receiving their awards at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's 1980 Golden Globe Awards show in Los Angeles, Jan. 28, 1980. Ms. She was said to have had a lifelong fear of drowning and dark water.

"Our biggest challenge is time", he said.

On Monday, following another boost in lurid publicity about the case provided by CBS News' 48 Hours on Saturday, a team of sheriff's detectives appeared at a press conference in Los Angeles to appeal for somebody - anybody - to come forward to help them explain the case they're convinced is "suspicious" but they've been unable to solve for almost four decades.

"More than 100 people came forward", said Corina. In 2012, the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office amended the death certificate, changing the manner of death from an accidental drowning to "drowning and other undetermined factors". After two weeks of investigation, her death was ruled an accident. "I can't say who caused the injuries".

His attorney has said he fully cooperated with investigators.

"People don't think what they know might be important". Wagner also allegedly refused to turn on the boat's searchlights when Davern made the suggestion.

Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner arrive at the premiere of "The Godfather", on August 24, 1972, in London.

One witness described hearing yelling and crashing sounds coming from the couple's stateroom, she said.
