Sony release new system upgrade TODAY, patch notes, key features revealed

Sony has revealed a number of new features that are set to come to the PlayStation 4 as part of the system's upcoming 5.50 update.

The update introduces a new family Play Time Management feature, the ability to upload custom wallpapers via USB, enhancements to notifications and the Quick Menu, and more. Family managers will be able to track playtime, as well as set restrictions either based on certain time windows or on total amount of time spent playing.

Sony is yet to announce precisely when system update 5.50 will roll out to the entire PlayStation community, so we'll keep you posted. The "This PS4" tab will list all the applications that are installed on the PS4 system. You can also zoom and crop your images so they look flawless on your dashboard. To avoid saving woes or untimely quitting, the child will be notified during gameplay before playtime is over. With the 5.5 update, you can insert a flash drive that has the image you want, and set it as your background from the Themes tab in Settings. Once the software goes live for everyone, you'll finally be able to change your PS4 wallpaper to an image from a USB stick, and do the same to customize a tournament or Team page.

What do you think of the free February PlayStation Plus games? Games will soon be broken down via what is now installed on the system - labeled as "This PS4" in the library - and all of the items associated with your account via an option labeled with your name and avatar. You'll also be able to access media shortcuts - when using Spotify on the console, for example, opening the Quick Menu and pressing square will allow you to control the volume. That means players still have plenty of time to redeem games like Knack, Rime, Spelunker HD, Grand Kingdom, Starblood Arena, and more. This change should serve to make it easier to figure out what you actually have on your system and available to play. If this happens, the games will be shown with a lock icon on top of the PS Plus logo, making it more obvious that re-subscribing will restore access to those games. You can also now permanently remove old notifications from the PS4 as well. This gives PS4 Pro owners who do not have a 4K TV another benefit beyond Boost Mode. Easy as that. Aside from this nifty feature that Sony is bringing for PS4 Pro users, there are a few other handful features and benefits coming as well. PS4 Pro users also get a new "supersampling mode" under settings to deliver better visuals for TVs with a 1080p resolution or less.

"Please note performance will vary, as games are optimised differently to take advantage of the power of the PS4 Pro". It features some (limited) options for modifying the image you have, such as zooming and cropping.
