11-year-old dies after falling through icy pond in Queens

Boy dies after falling through icy Forest Park pond in Queens, officials say

Two firefighters were also transported to the hospital for treatment of hypothermia, Healy said. He reportedly fell through the ice and could not get out. Sources say he was trying to help his friend, a 12-year-old boy, get back to shore. WABC-TV reported that firefighters took off their gear, stripping down to t-shirts and shorts during mid-30s temperatures, to find the boy under the water.

On Tuesday afternoon an 11-year-old boy lost his life after rescuing his friend from a frozen pond in Queens, New York. The Fire Department of NY says the boy walked out about 50 feet onto the frozen pond before the ice gave way. According to FDNY deputy chief, George Healy, the first responders came to the scene, which was at Forest Park Drive and Woodhaven Blvd., in four minutes after getting a 911 call at 4:05 p.m. EST.

The boy was pronounced dead at a hospital.

"They were in about chest deep water, wading through the water", Healy said. "There is nothing to physically keep these kids away [from the ponds]", Anthony Perez's aunt, Ida Centineo, said Wednesday outside the family's Queens home. "He's friendly with a lot of people, not shy - he loves to help".

"He always had his big smile".

Coraci said, "It stinks". "It's a shame something had to happen to this kid".

The pond sits at the bottom of a hill, surrounded by trees, with a winding a path leading to it.

Officials said Perez and another child were out on the frozen pond despite a sign for thin ice being near it.

Friends of Perez's family said he will be remembered fr his final act.

"There are a lot of lakes around the city of NY, and especially for children, they may be enticing this time of the year", he said.

"The ice is not safe. The ice is not safe, it's not going to support your weight, and it can have tragic consequences", Healy added.
