Patrice Evra to sign for West Ham

Frankfurt's French forward Sebastien Haller vies with Dortmund's German midfielder Julian Weigl during the German First division Bundesliga football match Eintracht Frankfurt

West Ham have signed former Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra on a short-term contract.

The 36-year-old was infamously fired by Marseille last year after kicking one of the club's fans in the head during a scuffle at a Europe League game in Portugal. City's right-winger that day Trevor Sinclair had a field day and Evra was hauled off at half-time.

Looking to add to their collection of players who appeared in their pomp for Manchester club five to seven years ago, West Ham United appear to have chose to recruit the free agent.

Evra of course had a brief spell with West Ham's current manager David Moyes.

However, he is believed to prefer a move to London, so Evra is unlikely to fill the Toffees problem left-back position anytime soon.

Evra's career has been dogged by controversy, not all of his making.

Evra has played 81 times for France, captaining the national team at the 2010 World Cup.

A year later, while playing for United, Evra was the target of a racist insult from then Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.

Why are West Ham after him?

West Ham did not reply when contacted for comment by Press Association Sport on Tuesday evening.

"We have to take a look at the age of the players we're signing".

"They won't be old journeymen, they will be young, energetic, fired-up players. They won't be 32". Evra joins an aging defense that also includes Pablo Zabaleta (33) and Jose Fonte (34).

The 36-year-old was banned from UEFA competition for the rest of the season but he is eligible to play in the Premier League.

Evra received a ban for the incident, which means he can not play in any UEFA tournaments.
