'We don't have a flu season,' Texas televangelist Gloria Copeland says

Gloria Copeland

More than 37 children across the country have died during a nasty flu outbreak that is already one of the worst on record, even though the season typically peaks in February. In fact, she says she doesn't believe there's such a thing as a flu season. "That's what we stand on and by His stripes we were healed", she declared in a now viral video posted on her ministry's Facebook page last Wednesday. The flu vaccine does not guarantee against illness, but experts say data suggests vaccinations make the flu milder. "We've got a duck season...a deer season...but we don't have a flu season", she said.

"We know what's wrong with you". "And don't receive it when somebody threatens you with, 'Everybody's getting the flu.' We've already had our shot: He bore our sicknesses and carried our diseases". "Now, which do you want to do? And by his stripes, we were healed".

Pointing to a Bible in front of her, Copeland said believers have already been healed and then she prayed for anyone who already has the flu to be healed. Copeland believe that those people should have told themselves that they didn't have flu symptoms, and that everyone would have been okay. "If however, you do get the flu, you can overcome it!" "We simply didn't do it", a former church member, Amy Arden, told the AP at the time. The show played an interview with the daughter of a Louisiana woman named Bonnie Parker who said Parker had refused to seek medical treatment for her cancer because of the Copelands' teachings.

"That's great - that's the way it's supposed to be", she continued. "Just keeping saying that". "Put words - inoculate yourself with the word of God". "Inoculate yourself with the word of God".

However, Copeland and her husband Kenneth, who runs Kenneth Copeland Ministries, have repeatedly told their followers that you don't need medicine if your belief in God is strong enough.

But "not everyone with flu will have a fever", according to the CDC.

Influenza and pneumonia-related deaths for this flu season are now categorized as an epidemic, according to the CDC. Agency officials have earlier predicted an unusually high number of pediatric deaths from the illness.

Last week, the CDC said flu hospitalizations have reached their highest point in almost a decade, and that 48 states are experiencing widespread illnesses due to the virus.
