Apple's iOS source code is out in the wild, now what?

Apple throws take-down notice at Git Hub to remove leaked iBoot code

Apple, however, calmed the concerns saying the code is tied to old software and would not affect the devices. However, Apple did not explain how the source code ended up being exposed to the public. That said, iBoot is highly sensitive code, and Apple apparently pays up to $200,000 under its bug bounty program to anyone who discovers bugs in the boot up procedure.

It is also the same reason the code could be so important for the hacking community who are always on the lookout for vulnerabilities and loop holes in operating systems.

The source code for one of the most secretive parts of the iPhone's operating system appears to have been leaked online. READ NEXT:70% of consumers would boycott services with poor data protection The release, presumably made by an Apple insider, has been described by iOS expert Jonathan Levin as "the biggest leak in history". However, as a precautionary measure, the company has removed the code from GitHub via a DMCA takedown notice. First off, believe it or not, there are a ton of users out there who own Apple devices that are more than three years old; MacWorld says that almost 95% of Apple customers use older versions of iOS.

The discovery of the iBoot source code on GitHub was first noticed by security website Motherboard.

"But Apple should be anxious because if somebody has got hold of that, what else have they got?" In any case, Apple will have enough time to secure things up and might issue a patch to cover any risks posed by the leak.

The original Apple employee did not respond to our request for comment and said through his friend that he did not now want to talk about it because he signed a non-disclosure agreement with Apple.

Mr. Levin says that having the modern iBoot's source code is the key for both hackers and security researchers to find vulnerabilities in iOS. Although the source was only available for a short time, it's likely that hundreds of people viewed and downloaded the material while it was available. The iPhone maker has also confirmed the code posted at GitHub is real indeed, but it isn't clear yet as to how it got leaked or who is responsible for it either.
