Two police officers were fatally shot on Saturday in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio, as they responded to a potential domestic violence situation following a 911 hang-up call, police said.

Morbitzer says the officers "gave their lives in defense of others" and "they're true American heroes". The 17-year-old says police often were called to the home. The officers were shot after they arrived at a residence.

After both cops were struck, Morbitzer said that 39-year-old Joering died on scene while Morelli, 54, was transported to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where he died.

The suspect was wounded and taken to a nearby hospital, according to a CBS News report.

No additional information about the suspect or the incident to which police responded were immediately available.
