Russia calls for restraint from Israel, Syria

Two Israeli air force F-15s

The military operation of the Israeli Air Force (IAF) on Saturday was "the most significant" action against the air defense of neighboring Syria for the past 36 years, and it was fully successful, IAF Chief of Staff Brig.

The statement said the Israeli air strikes had targeted drones used in the fight against "terrorist organisations, primarily Daesh", referring to the Islamic State jihadist group. "We can not confirm this report on the drone because Israelis are liars ... if Syrians confirm it, Iran will confirm it as well", said Salami, according to a Reuters translation.

Israel asked the United Nations Security Council on Saturday to condemn Iran after an Iranian drone was shot down over Israeli territory earlier in the day. "The Ministry calls on the countries concerned to curb the Israeli practices and stop its attacks".

"The Syrians and the Iranians are playing with fire", Israeli military spokesman Ronen Manelis said on the army's Twitter feed.

"The Israeli enemy has resumed aggression on some military positions in the southern region and our air defenses have responded to them and thwarted the aggression", Syrian military said in a statement.

Israel's air force has aimed at Syrian military and Hizbollah targets in Syria on an nearly regular basis, but its attacks yesterday appeared to be the most intense yet. "Today's developments mean the old equations have categorically ended", the heavily-armed movement said in a statement.

Israeli military spokesman Jonathan Conricus said was "responsible for this severe violation of Israeli sovereignty".

"Over the past four decades, since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, the USA has gained no significant achievement in the region", he noted.

Syria state television later cited a Syrian military official as saying that Israeli "aggression" targeted the Syrian army base in the central region of the country.

The senior commander said the Zionist regime has been created by the USA and the United Kingdom, adding the Islamic Republic of Iran began to inflict heavy blows on the U.S. since early years of the Islamic Revolution.

Syria said its air defences repelled two Israeli raids on its military bases in the centre of the country, hitting more than one warplane during the first.

Israel has conducted dozens of strikes inside Syrian borders to defend what it calls its red lines, and to prevent what it says is Iran's proxy Hezbollah - fighting alongside the Syrian regime - from acquiring advanced weaponry.

Iran, along with Russian Federation - which had helped prop up the Assad government - denied that any of its drones had entered Israeli air space or that they had any role in shooting down the Israeli jet.

The pilots of an F16 abandoned in flight their aircraft that crashed in the region of the Jezreel Valley (north).

The IDF also confirmed with Xinhua that one Israeli F-16 fighter was hit and crashed, and the pilots were forced to abandon the fighter.
