Jacob Zuma's Exit From South Africa Presidency to Be Finalized Monday

Tobeka Madiba-Zuma

African National Congress (ANC) leader and South Africa deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa, on Sunday revealed at the launch of the Mandela centenary celebrations in Cape Town that he was employing the late statesman's strategy of being "careful" when dealing with hard matters.

South Africa's ANC has called a meeting of its national executive for Monday, as Ramaphosa and his allies lobby for President Zuma to step down. We know you want this matter to be finalised.

Speaking at the opening of the Mandela centenary celebrations in Cape Town at the Grand Parade, Ramaphosa said: "It is these qualities that we should seek to understand, appreciate and emulate as we embark upon the path of unity and renewal". Politically, however, that case never went away: The opposition vowed not to let the matter drop, and has since used it to illustrate its lack of faith in the president through eight no-confidence votes in relation to his alleged corrupt acts before and during his presidency.

"I don't understand why the ANC's new leadership has not removed Zuma already because that is long overdue", he said at the rally.

Standing on the balcony of Cape Town's pillared City Hall, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered what amounted to a state of the nation address of the kind that Zuma was unable to give as scheduled last week because of the leadership crisis in South Africa, which has one of the continent's biggest economies.

Ramaphosa told the ANC supporters that discussions with Zuma over his possible resignation were taking place using Madiba's "style".

"The matters that are at hand, they are not simple matters, they are complex matters, we have faith in (Ramaphosa) and his ability to find solutions to take us forward", Duarte told local news service Eyewitness News on Sunday.

The president, who denies wrongdoing, is due to end his second five-year term at elections next year.

It is widely expected that Zuma will resign this weekend or early next week, after increasing pressure from ANC leadership structures following Ramaphosa's victory at the party's elective conference in December.

For Piet Zati, an unemployed father of four from Cape Town's Khayelitsha township, a change in power can't happen soon enough.

Ramaphosa said successful resolution of the issue around the presidency had significant consequences for South Africa and the ANC.

The African National Congress's top six officials had been called into an urgent meeting with Zuma, Johannesburg-based broadcaster eNCA reported.

"This leaves a situation where all deployees in all levels will draw inspiration from this unprincipled conduct of resisting to leave deployment (office)", Njadayi said.

Ramaphosa said the ANC would continue Mandela's legacy by fighting corruption.
