Olympics Luge Men's Final medal results, highlights and more

Winter Olympics Keshavan ends 34th David Gleirscher wins luge gold after dramatic final run

And when it comes to men's singles luge, Mazdzer will always be the first. Today, it was Chris Mazdzer's turn. Mazdzer's medal was the Team USA's sixth all time in the luge, which was introduced to the Winter Games in 1964.

Mazdzer, the 29-year-old from Pittsfield, Mass., finished behind Austria's David Gleirscher, who won a shocking gold as Germany's Felix Loch faltered in his final run.

Halfway through the four-round event, Mazdzer was in fourth place, with a total time of 1:35.517 - just one one-thousandth of a second behind Roman Repilov, Olympic Athlete from Russian Federation, but it would have been enough to keep him off the medal stand.

Loch had won gold in the last two Olympics in men's singles.

Indeed, his previous Olympic showings didn't exactly augur this historic feat. Luger Chris Mazdzer added a second medal to Team USA's total with a silver in luge. Mazdzer finished both the 2010 Vancouver Games and the 2014 Sochi Games in 13th place.

The U.S. had already medaled in women's singles luge - Erin Hamlin was the first to do so, winning bronze in 2014 - as well as doubles luge. But it was only with his second and third runs - which he finished second and first, respectively - that Mazdzer climbed the leader board. In the final run his time of 47.677, his second-best of the competition, was enough to land the silver.

Far more heartbreaking was Loch; he hopped just the tiniest bit on his final run, enough to drop him into fifth.

Chris Mazdzer reacts following his track-record run during the luge men's singles at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChnag 2018 on February 11, 2018 in PyeongChang, South Korea.

"The men's medal and then the gold medal, and then we'll be a happy organization", Caligiore said.
