State AG asks court to intervene in sale of Weinstein company

NY AG To File Civil Rights Lawsuit Against Weinstein Company; Will It Fatally Imperil Deal And Employees?

New York State's Attorney-General is suing Harvey Weinstein and his former company for allegedly failing to protect employees from the movie producer.

The lawsuit has halted a potential sale of the company.

"As alleged in our complaint, The Weinstein Company repeatedly broke NY law by failing to protect its employees from pervasive sexual harassment, intimidation, and discrimination", state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said in court papers.

He has since been accused of rape by three women, sexual assault, and harassment.

The Weinstein Co. has been in talks to sell itself to a group of investors led by Maria Contreras-Sweet, a former Obama administration official, but the lawsuit has reportedly put such negotiations on hold.

Weinstein's drivers in Los Angeles and NY were required to keep condoms and erectile dysfunction injections in the vehicle at all times, papers charge. "Today's suit includes numerous employee-victim accounts of sexual harassment, intimidation, and other misconduct", said a statement from the attorney general's office.

"Female Weinstein employees are essentially used to facilitate his sexual conquests of vulnerable women who hope he will get them work", one female executive said, according to the suit.

Harvey Weinstein, pictured at the 70th annual Cannes Film Festival at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc on May 23, 2017 in Cap d'Antibes, France, was attacked at a restaurant. Allegations first surfaced in October after an investigative report by the New York Times.

The suit charges that the human resources department at the Weinstein Company was completely corrupt.
