The Mark McMorris story: From agony to ecstasy

Mark McMorris 24 who also won a bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi Russia was also seriously injured in 2016 and needed a metal rod surgically implanted in his leg

The 24-year-old staked an early claim for the most inspirational story at the Pyeongchang Winter Games in the snowboard slopestyle, sealing third behind compatriot Max Parrot, in silver, and Amercian teenage gold medallist Red Gerard. Gerard's final run was good enough for 87.16, and McMorris scored a 85.20 for the bronze. McMorris fell in his final trip down the course. The bronze medallist in slopestyle at Sochi - where he rode on a recently broken rib - crashed into a tree in the Whistler backcountry past year, shattering several bones and requiring multiple surgeries to correct life-threatening injuries.

QUEEN JUSTINE - Montreal freestyle skier Justine Dufour-Lapointe finished on the podium for a second straight Games when she took the silver medal in women's moguls.

In March, McMorris was riding in the backcountry near Whistler, British Columbia, when he went off a jump and crashed into a tree, resulting in a broken jaw, broken left arm, ruptured spleen, a pelvic fracture, rib fractures and a collapsed lung.

From the start of his recovery, he was determined to get back to his previous snowboarding form.

American Redmond Gerard won the men's snowboard slopestyle of 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games at Phoenix Snow Park here on Sunday.

The final was a highly anticipated event for Canadian fans as four talented Team Canada athletes qualified and had to deliver an exemplary performance for a place on the podium.

Bloemen finished in the 5,000 in 6:11.616.

The Dutch-born, Calgary-based skater said he didn't know if he had beaten Pedersen when he crossed the finish line. "I would just be so embarrassed".

Reflecting on his fourth Olympic gold medal, and his third consecutive 5000m title, Kramer said that his secret to success was that "I just really love what I'm doing".

Duhamel, of Lively, Ont., and Radford, of Balmertown, Ont., then took top spot in pairs, giving Canada an additional 10 points and 45 overall. The first time they've played together was the trials in January and now they are two wins away from Olympic gold.
