Bomber gets life in prison for NY and NJ attacks

New Jersey man sentenced to life in prison for planting bombs including one that injured more than 30 people

Ahmad Khan Rahimi, center, is led into court in Elizabeth, N.J. on December 20.

At his sentencing, Rahimi said, "I don't harbor hate for anyone", the Associated Press reported.

In court, Rahimi echoed his father's remarks, seeming to blame the Federal Bureau of Investigation for not stopping him sooner.

Given a chance to speak, Rahimi, shackled at the ankles, portrayed himself as a victim, saying he came to America as a 7-year-old boy with no hatred for anyone and was raised by a father in a household where there was no mention of what his father experienced during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan.

Rahimi still faces charges in New Jersey over the first bombing and for shooting at police before being captured two days after the bombings.

Judge Berman said Tuesday that Rahimi's defense provided "not an ounce of justification".

One of the counts called for a maximum life sentence so his punishment was preordained, but U.S. District Judge Richard Berman also gave him the maximum on the other counts for a total of two life sentences plus 30 years.

Rahimi is a naturalized US citizen who was born in Afghanistan and lived in Elizabeth, N.J. Prosecutors describe him as acting alone, inspired by terrorist propaganda on the Internet.

On Monday, in an interview with WNBC, Rahimi's father called his son a terrorist, but said Rahimi is glad no one died in the incidents.

Prosecutors had used a Rahimi diary as evidence that he wanted to be a part of jihad, but in court Tuesday Rahimi didn't take responsibility for the bombing. "We remain vigilant, resolute and safe", de Blasio wrote in a tweet after Rahimi's conviction in October.

Rahimi was arrested and charged after a pressure cooker bomb went off in New York's Chelsea neighborhood the night of September 17, 2016.

A second bomb planted nearby did not go off.

The first explosion, on September 17, occurred along the route of a charity 5K race in Seaside Park, New Jersey.

The third bomb was found four blocks north at 27th Street.

During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence - including DNA and fingerprints - linking Rahimi to the bombs that were placed in New Jersey and NY.

Police also defused another device in Chelsea and found additional pipe bombs in Rahimi's hometown of Elizabeth, New Jersey, where he worked in his family's fried chicken restaurant.
