Figure skaters win Canada 1st gold medal at Pyeongchang Olympics

COC president Tricia Smith CEO Chris Overholt executive director Eric Myles and Chef de Mission Isabelle Charest and bobsledder Cam Stones during a news conference at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang South Korea

Canada took gold in the team event after stellar performances by Patrick Chan and Gabrielle Daleman on Monday, with Chan landing two quads early in his free skate on his way to finally winning Olympic gold. The Russians could pick up a maximum of four points in that discipline.

"Obviously the skaters in generations before us didn't have the opportunity to win multiple medals at an Olympic Games", Moir said.

"I'm going to hold this medal tight to me". Four years after he suffered the most disappointing defeat of his career on an Olympic stage, Chan, skating to Hallelujah, helped Canada win its first gold and became the first Canadian male singles skater to win Olympic gold, period.

"I'm just happy I did the best I could and I left nothing, no rock unturned", said Chan, who admitted his nerves were jangling and he "just had a conversation with myself" to get back on track. You have to be pretty fortunate to do multiple games and have a shot at medals.

Chan put it perfectly (and humbly as ever), acknowledging that it was truly a team effort: "I'm an Olympic gold medalist now, thanks to a team".

The pair finished fourth in both the short program and free skate.

Nagasu's rousing skate solidified her team's claim for a medal - and she even included a yell out on the ice, something her teammates echoed as they looked on. "I'm sorry, that's how I'm going to see it, that's how I'm going to enjoy it, and that's for me to decide".

It wasn't really the whole routine, though.

Zagitova, the rising star from Russian Federation and current European champion, topped Nagasu's score by 20 points. "I just skated with all my heart and just was in the moment completely", said Daleman.

"Of course I was nervous, I didn't want to let my team down".

Just like Friday's men's short program, the men's free skate was anything but memorable. "So we wanted to change it, make it a little bit better", Moir told reporters.

Still, his third-place finish extended the Americans' lead over Italy to two points, helping the Americans get closer to replicating their showing in Sochi.

The final results on Monday mirrored the tally from the qualifying rounds one day before: Canada took gold, followed by the Russians and the USA team. "I went out there and I did my job".

The Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) secured the silver medal after Alina Zagitova put in an awesome performance to win gold in the women's free skate event. "To do it for them who have supported me and watched me and been on this long road that's been up and down, that feels incredible".

In other night finals, Ireen Wust won her fifth Olympic title and the Dutch speedskaters picked up gold and bronze in the 1,500 meters, biathlon No. 1 Martin Fourcade won the 12.5-kilometer pursuit, and Maren Lundby of Norway won the women's ski jumping normal hill.
