American Emily Sweeney walks away after scary Olympic luge crash

Emily Sweeney Is OK After That Scary Olympic Luge Crash

She was immediately checked by medics for injuries.

It appeared that prior to crash, Sweeney was bracing for Curve 9 before things spiraled downward. She wound up sliding feet-first up one curve toward the track roof before getting thrown from her sled and eventually tumbling to a stop. Medics rushed to her side right after the crash to check on her.

These were the first Olympics for Sweeney.

She was conscious and was able to walk off the ice with some assistance. She actually said she was okay at that point, and it was confirmed that she had no broken bones or anything of that nature, though she was then taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

The 2018 Winter Olympics have seen some incredible highs for US athletes (see Chloe Kim's gold medal halfpipe, Mirai Nagasu's historic triple axel, and Adam Rippon's gorgeous Coldplay routine), but American Emily Sweeney's terrifying luge crash on her final run today gave her teammates, family, and fans a scare. "The crowd was stunned and went silent".

Luge is an extremely risky sport.

Her older sister, Megan Sweeney, is a former Olympic luger.

Curve 9 on the Olympic luge track has become a nightmare for luge athletes. He hit an unprotected steel pillar and died at a nearby hospital.

Spectators and viewers expressed their concern via social media as many feared the United States athlete had hit her head and neck. As she was helped into an ambulance, Sweeney reportedly assured spectators, "I'm fine". "I wanted something else to pursue beyond my athletic career".
