United States woman wakes up with British accent

Michelle has now come to terms with her new voice

Former beauty queen Michelle Myers, 45, from Arizona has never left the country.

Three times in the past seven years, Myers has gone to sleep with blinding headaches only to wake up with a different accent. The British accent is the latest in her weird string of voice changes after she fell asleep with a headache, and she's understandably frustrated.

Speaking to ABC Arizona about her rare condition, Myers said: "They send in the psychiatrist at the hospital and make sure you're not a loon".

It was proven that Myers is not insane nor is she faking her changing accents.

There's a medical reason for Meyers' problem - she's been diagnosed with a disorder called Foreign Accent Syndrome (FAS).

She said: "I felt like I lost a person".

It turns out Meyers suffers from Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a disease that Ehlers-Danlos Support UK defines as "a group of thirteen individual genetic conditions, all of which affect the body's connective tissue".

Looking back at how she used to be is hard, Myers says. It is possible that this might have led to Myers's unusual change in accents. The disorder typically occurs after strokes or traumatic brain injuries damage the language center of a person's brain - to the degree that their native language sounds like it is tinged with a foreign accent, according to the Center for Communication Disorders at the University of Texas at Dallas. Best her doctors can tell, it also turned her British. Talking with foreign accents have had notable effects on her well-being, as a crucial part of her identity goes through a frequent flux. According to doctors, this condition, although extremely rare, is indeed real. Each time, the accent lasted about a week.

Health professionals told Meyers that patients with Foreign Accent Syndrome often have underlying health issues, such as neurological damage or strokes. It's not clear if this has any connection with her accent change.

"I'm sad", she said, watching an old video of her speaking normally.

She continued: "Sometimes, people can be quite hostile. The person that I am now have been through a lot".

It wasn't until 1982, that the term "foreign-accent syndrome" was coined by neurolinguist Harry Whitaker, Julie Beck wrote for The Atlantic in 2016. Meyers said, adding that more people should take the condition seriously.

"Some people think it's physiological; others think it's psychological", she told the station. "People like me - we don't care which one it is".
